Accidental dental displacement into the maxillary sinus during extraction maneuvers: a case series

2020

Background The aims of this study were to describe the clinical findings of patients that suffered teeth displacement into the maxillary sinus, and to report the surgical technique used to solve this complication. Material and Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted involving patients that suffered a displacement of teeth into the maxillary sinus. Demographic and clinical data were recorded from the affected patients and a descriptive statistical analysis was made of the study variables. Results A total of nine patients were enrolled, six males (66.7%) and three females (33.3%), with a mean age of 36.0 years (range 22-54). In five patients (55.5%) the displaced teeth remai…

Prevalence of complications after the oral rehabilitation with implant-supported hybrid prostheses

2010

Objectives: Assess the main problems referred by the patients and observed by the professionals after the bucodental rehabilitation with an implant-supported hybrid prothesis. Patient and Methods: A retrospective study was carried out in which there were 43 patients included who were visited in the Department of Oral Surgery and Orofacial Implantology of University of Barcelona Dental School for one year. An oral rehabilitation with an implant-supported hybrid prosthesis was made to those patients. The following variables were registered: age, gender, number of inserted implants, type of implant and principal problems produced by the hybrid prosthesis. Results: The rehabilitation with an im…

Perinatal and newborn care in a two years retrospective study in a first level peripheral hospital in Sicily (Italy)

2019

Abstract Background Two hundred seventy-five thousand maternal deaths, 2.7 million neonatal deaths, and 2.6 million stillbirths have been estimated in 2015 worldwide, almost all in low-income countries (LICs). Moreover, more than 20 million severe disabilities result from the complications of pregnancy, childbirth or its management each year. A significant decrease of mortality/morbidity rates could be achieved by providing effective perinatal and newborn care also in high-income countries (HICs), especially in peripheral hospitals and/or rural areas, where the number of childbirths per year is often under the minimal threshold recognized by the reference legislation. We report on a 2 years…

Study protocol: fit for delivery - can a lifestyle intervention in pregnancy result in measurable health benefits for mothers and newborns? A randomi…

2013

Abstract Background The global obesity epidemic has led to increased attention on pregnancy, a period when women are at risk of gaining excessive weight. Excessive gestational weight gain is associated with numerous complications, for both mother and child. Though the problem is widespread, few studies have examined the effect of a lifestyle intervention in pregnancy designed to limit maternal weight gain. The Fit for Delivery study will explore the effectiveness of nutritional counseling coupled with exercise classes compared with standard prenatal care. The aims of the study are to examine the effect of the intervention on maternal weight gain, newborn birth weight, glucose regulation, co…

Insulin, sodium-lithium countertransport, and microalbuminuria in hypertensive patients.

1998

Abstract —Both microalbuminuria (>0.290 nmol/min [20 μg/min]) and high sodium-lithium countertransport (SLC) in diabetic or hypertensive humans are predictive of overt nephropathy and more aggressive cardiovascular complications, perhaps induced by insulin resistance. To analyze the relationships between microalbuminuria, SLC, microalbuminuria, and insulin in essential hypertension, we studied 90 hypertensive white patients, 25 of whom had microalbuminuria and 32 of whom were healthy. When urine sampling was completed for albuminuria determination, SLC was measured; all patients then underwent standard (75 g) oral glucose load to measure basal (0 minutes) and 2-hour glucose and insulin …

Sharp mandibular bone irregularities after lower third molar extraction: incidence, clinical features and risk factors

2012

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence and clinical symptoms associated with sharp mandibular bone irregularities (SMBI) after lower third molar extraction and to identify possible risk factors for this complication. Study Design: A mixed study design was used. A retrospective cohort study of 1432 lower third molar extractions was done to determine the incidence of SMBI and a retrospective case-control study was done to determine potential demographic and etiologic factors by comparing those patients with postoperative SMBI with controls. Results: Twelve SMBI were found (0.84%). Age was the most important risk factor for this complication. The operated side and…

Methotrexate as a treatment in ocular cicatricial moderate pemphigoid.

2013

Abstract Clinical case A 73 year-old woman presented with a history of non-specific symptoms and photophobia in both eyes of 1 year progression. The examination revealed a bilateral symblepharon and fornix shortening. Immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the presence of linear deposits of IgG, IgM and C3 along the conjunctival basement membrane. With the diagnosis of ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, systemic treatment with subcutaneous methotrexate was prescribed. Discussion We consider such treatment a very effective initial immunosuppressive alternative in patients with moderate conjunctival inflammation and in cases of rapid progression.

Choroidal thickness is associated with renal hemodynamics in essential hypertension

2020

The choroid is the most vascularized structure of the eye and plays a central role in the development of the retinal vascular changes that occur in arterial hypertension. Changes of choroidal thickness (ChT) assessed by optical coherence tomography (OCT) technology could reflect the vascular complications of hypertension. Also, intrarenal hemodynamic damage, associated with endothelial dysfunction, demonstrated to be a good indicator of systemic morphofunctional arterial impairment. The aim of this study is to assess the relationship between ChT and renal hemodynamics in subjects with essential hypertension. Routine laboratory tests, clinical history, and physical examination, including blo…

Operācijas laika ietekme uz apendektomijas rezultātu

2018

Kopsavilkums Nosaukums: Operācijas laika izvēles ietekme uz apendektomijas rezultātu Fons: Apendektomija ir viena no pasaulē visbiežāk veiktajām akūtajām ķirurģiskajām manipulācijām. Vēsturiski to veic nekavējoties un neatkarīgi no diennakts laika.

Dental caries in type 1 diabetics: influence of systemic factors of the disease upon the development of dental caries.

2006
